Saryu River to Be Diverted at Kamhariya Ghat Before Monsoon to Protect Gorakhpur Link Expressway

To protect the Gorakhpur Link Expressway from erosion, the process of diverting the Saryu River’s flow near the Kamhariya Ghat Bridge has begun. This process is expected to be completed by May. The river’s course is being altered using geo-tubes filled with sand and channel cutting techniques. This work is being carried out over a stretch of 1.70 km, with iron sheets being placed up to a depth of 26 meters. Additionally, 40 meters wide and 5 meters deep sand layers are being compacted.

Special Measures to Prevent Erosion

To protect the Gorakhpur Link Expressway near the Kamhariya Ghat Bridge, geo-textile tubes filled with sand have been placed to prevent erosion. Now, the process of diverting the river’s flow has started and is expected to be completed by May.

To redirect the Saryu River, the Setu Nigam has developed a three-tier safety plan, which includes:

  • A protective wall made of geo-textile tubes (20×3 meters) filled with sand along a 1,500-meter stretch to prevent riverbank erosion.
  • The river will be shifted 40 to 50 meters away after passing through silted land.
  • To direct the existing river flow towards the main channel, channel cutting is being done, with geo-tubes supported by bamboo poles being placed.
  • The river’s flow will be straightened over a 1,700-meter stretch.
  • To control erosion, iron sheets are being inserted up to a depth of 26 meters, and 40 meters wide and 5 meters deep sand layers are being compressed using heavy machinery. This work will also be completed within two months.

Other Construction Work to Be Completed Soon

According to P.P. Verma, Executive Engineer at UPEIDA, construction work on the Gorakhpur Link Expressway, including at Jaitpur and other locations, will be completed within this month. The protection of the Kamhariya Ghat Bridge and the diversion of the river’s flow are in progress.

Additionally, the land for a public convenience center has already been allocated. As soon as instructions are received, the process of identifying locations for hospitals will also begin.
