The Gorakhpur Link Expressway will be fully operational for vehicles from April. The remaining construction work is being completed swiftly, and officials have been directed to finish all tasks by March 31.
On Monday, Chief Secretary and UP Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) Chairman Manoj Kumar Singh inspected the expressway and reviewed the security measures near Belghat’s Kamhariya Ghat bridge. The three-tier security system and diversion of the Sarayu River’s flow were also assessed. The inspection also covered the Bhagwanpur toll plaza near Sahjanwa.
Fast-Tracked Construction Work
The Gorakhpur Link Expressway was initially scheduled to open in January but faced technical issues due to the strong current of the Sarayu River near Belghat. To address this, a three-tier security barrier is being installed, including sheet piles, textile tubes, and a dredger channel. The project has a total cost of ₹198 crore and is nearing completion.
Reduced Travel Time to Lucknow
The 91.35 km long Gorakhpur Link Expressway will benefit people in Gorakhpur, Ambedkar Nagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Azamgarh. Once operational, it will reduce travel time to Lucknow to just 3.30 hours. Though this route is 30-40 km longer than the traditional route via Gorakhpur and Ayodhya, the absence of obstructions will make the journey quicker.
Two Utility Centers to be Developed
Following the model of Agra and Yamuna Expressways, two major utility centers will be built along the Gorakhpur Link Expressway. These centers, covering 30 acres each, will feature petrol pumps, CNG stations, hotels, restaurants, and vehicle repair garages. One center will be located in Gorakhpur and the other in Azamgarh. UPEIDA has approved their development in a recent board meeting.
